Are Lunch Bags Safe for Microwaving Popcorn?

When it comes to food safety, paper lunch bags are designed for direct contact with both hot and cold foods. If these bags posed any toxic risks, the FDA would have issued warnings by now. The way they are used for microwaving popcorn is quite similar to their standard use, with the primary distinction being the brief exposure to heat inside the microwave. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that they are safe for such purposes. In contrast, I would be concerned about the potential for plastic to melt or release harmful fumes when subjected to high temperatures. I prefer using paper lunch bags specifically labeled for this use, folding the open end over twice to secure the contents. I've experimented with various methods of popping corn: plain kernels, kernels with oil, kernels with oil and salt, plain popcorn in a bag with holes punched, and popcorn with oil in a bag with holes punched. The last method produced the fluffiest and lightest popcorn, surpassing even the stove-popped variety. It's important to note that a certain chemical, diacetyl, commonly used for butter flavoring, emits toxic fumes when heated. This chemical has killed popcorn factory workers, raising questions about its safety for consumers since the FDA has not pursued investigations regarding this risk. Furthermore, the EPA is restricting access to pertinent information regarding flavor manufacturers. Public health studies, funded by taxpayers, should be transparent, and all information should be viewable by the public. Regarding the potential leaching of chemicals from paper bags, opting for unbleached varieties seems to be a safer choice based on discussions. The implications of using recycled versus non-recycled paper have not yet been thoroughly studied. There may also be concerns regarding the adhesives used in these bags. While I assume they utilize non-toxic glues, such as those similar to Elmer's, it's prudent to question their safety. The discussion of aerosolized oils causing severe lung issues indicates that the risks are not solely linked to diacetyl. For example, lipoid pneumonia is a well-known concern in such cases.
