The Nanhui watermelon has long been a cherished summer fruit for residents of Shanghai. Recently, it made its reappearance in local markets just as the city noted a decrease in new COVID-19 cases. Known for its incredible sweetness and juiciness, this variety is primarily cultivated in Nanhui town, situated in the Lin-gang Special Area of East China's Shanghai.
Zhang Tao, a representative from the Pudong agricultural association, reported that this year the cultivated area for Nanhui watermelons stood at approximately 10,000 mu (around 666.7 hectares), remaining consistent with last year’s figures. Zhang remarked that the COVID-19 pandemic did not seem to curtail the demand for this sought-after fruit.
Farmers have adapted by utilizing online sales and other innovative distribution methods, which have facilitated the movement of their harvested crops. According to Zhang, retail channels like Hema Fresh, a supermarket specializing in fresh produce, have significantly enhanced the reach of these watermelons to households throughout Shanghai.
Distributors are also experiencing thriving sales, further validating the watermelon's popularity. "Purchases of the watermelon this year are up by 40 percent compared to last year," noted Zhao Jiayu, vice president of Hema Fresh.

Carrefour has found itself in controversy after the Shanghai Consumer Council issued allegations concerning the sale of counterfeit watermelons.
The Nanhui watermelon, with its exceptional sweet and juicy reputation, is a prized local variety from the suburban Nanhui region of Pudong New Area.
This variety has achieved national recognition, boasting a brand value of 250 million yuan (US$38.58 million). The Nanhui 8424 watermelon derives its name from a series of agricultural trials aimed at developing new watermelon strains.
Recently, the public relayed complaints to the local council, alleging that the watermelons marketed as Nanhui and sold at Suning Carrefour in Shanghai were not genuine. Investigations revealed that the trademarks on these watermelons differed from the official registered marks.
Authentic Nanhui watermelons are equipped with QR codes that allow for traceability of their origin; however, these counterfeit melons lacked such identification. In response to these findings, the council has mandated that Suning Carrefour address consumer questions regarding the authenticity of their products.
