Guide to American Solar Panel Manufacturers in May 2024

"American-made solar panels not only support local jobs but also promote technological innovations and improve energy security," says the U.S. Department of Energy.

Although American-made solar panels are more expensive, there are several benefits to choosing a U.S. brand. Supporting the domestic economy, advancing solar technology research, and reducing your carbon footprint by shortening the supply chain are some of these advantages. Additionally, investing in renewable energy within the U.S. can aid in enhancing energy security and strengthening the power grid.

However, U.S.-made solar panels, especially those entirely composed of American-made components, are hard to find, and overseas production still leads the market. Overseas panels are not necessarily of lower quality. Investing in solar energy, irrespective of the equipment’s origin, helps reduce your carbon footprint and offset electricity bills.

Quality Standards and Assurance

While there is debate on whether American-made solar panels are of better quality than those made overseas, this often comes down to a consumer's preference and price sensitivity.

The U.S. Department of Energy supports American solar manufacturers by overseeing national labs, investors, and entrepreneurs to ensure development and quality.

All solar manufacturers test modules under standard conditions, examining efficiency, wattage, and durability in industry-standard laboratories. Consequently, you can compare solar panels based on specific metrics like energy-efficiency ratings, regardless of the brand.

North American-made solar panels come with 25-year product warranties, longer than some overseas competitors. Andrei Gorinchenski from A1 Solar Store notes, “Customer service for U.S.-based solar companies is much easier to access, though solar panel owners rarely need much of it.”

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Solar power, as the fastest-growing renewable energy source, significantly impacts the American economy. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the solar industry generated nearly $35 billion in private investment in the U.S. economy in 2022 alone.

The U.S. solar industry employs almost 264,000 people across all 50 states. About 33,500 jobs are in solar manufacturing, and 30,600 are in wholesale trade and distribution. Purchasing U.S.-made solar panels supports such jobs and boosts local economies.

Supporting Domestic Innovation and Research

Government programs and funding support domestic innovation and research, enhancing solar technology and infrastructure. Purchasing an American-made solar system can help domestic manufacturers develop more innovative, efficient, and viable technologies.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) funds domestic solar innovation and research. SETO offers several incentives for solar advancements, including the $3 million American-Made Solar Prize competition and other funding opportunities.

The Biden-Harris Administration announced a $45 million investment in domestic solar manufacturing and a $20 million investment in solar panel disposal and recycling research.

These funding opportunities have improved the ability of domestic solar manufacturers to develop new products and advance the U.S. solar market.

Description

List of the 10 Largest Solar Panel Manufacturers

The global solar panel industry is challenging to compare as companies use different metrics to measure their size and production capacities. Some announce annual capacity while others announce lifetime capacity. We compiled a list that includes the largest companies in both categories.

LONGi Solar is one of the largest solar panel manufacturers globally. Located in Xi'an, China, LONGi Solar has annual revenues of 8.416 billion USD and produces 30GW of high-efficiency solar wafers and modules per year. These modules are monocrystalline and use PERC and bifacial technology.

Update 2024: LONGi signed a substantial 576MW sales agreement with Nofar Energy Romania for a PV project. The project, expected to start construction in 2024, will utilize LONGi’s Hi-MO 7 modules and is projected to be operational in 2025.

JinkoSolar, a listed manufacturer from Shanghai, China, owns nine production facilities globally with an annual capacity of 31 GW for wafers, 19 GW for solar cells, and 36 GW for modules. JinkoSolar focuses on Half-Cell, Bifacial, and Tiling Ribbon technologies.

Trina Solar, based in Jiangsu, China, was founded in 1997. Having delivered over 77 GW of modules globally, the company develops ultra-high power monocrystalline modules incorporating bifacial technology.

Canadian Solar, founded in 2001, has shipped over 63 GW of modules worldwide and is publicly traded on NASDAQ. It produces inverters, energy storage systems, and modules using Bifacial, HJT, and PERC technologies.

List of the Largest Photovoltaic Module Manufacturers

Solar energy remains one of the most crucial renewable energies. The amount of sunlight the earth receives in one hour surpasses the annual global energy consumption, making it a notable and cost-effective energy source.

The Largest Producers Included in This List

This list features the largest photovoltaic module producers globally. Most companies are based in China, but there are also representatives from India, the U.S., Germany, and other countries.

Main PV Technologies Covered in Our Database

The listed manufacturers produce state-of-the-art PV modules, utilizing technologies like crystalline silicon and thin-film.

Crystalline Silicon Modules

Comprising around 90% of solar modules, crystalline silicon modules can be either monocrystalline (higher efficiency and cost) or polycrystalline (lower efficiency and cost).

Thin-Film Solar Modules

Thin-film technology is relatively new and offers versatile shapes and sizes for high-efficiency solar cells.

State-of-the-Art Solar Cell Technologies Included in Our List

The list highlights advanced crystalline technologies like PERC, Bifacial, HJT, and Half-Cell.

PERC Architecture

PERC technology enhances crystalline solar cells' ability to capture more sunlight by adding a layer that allows more electrons to be captured, reducing heat damage over time.

Bifacial

Bifacial solar panels capture light from both sides, often installed on solar parks for maximum efficiency.

BIPV

Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) integrates solar panels into buildings, providing dual utility.

HJT

Heterojunction technology combines crystalline silicon wafers with thin-film cells, creating a highly efficient hybrid solar cell.

Half-Cell

Half-Cell technology allows solar panels to function even when part of them is shaded, enhancing heat mitigation and reliability.
