Comparison of VATN displays to displays with the OLED technology is intentional… Naturally, VATN (vertically aligned twisted nematic) displays are not the same as OLED ones but by their (perceptual) features they significantly overcome classic STN and FSTN displays thus creating a very interesting alternative if you´re searching for something better and at the same time you´re not willing to invest to OLED displays.

What´s the key advantage of VATN displays?

It can be said, that mainly a great contrast of 1:100 up to 1:1000 (FSTN has typically 1:10 to 1:15) and excellent viewing angles which really significantly overcome STN/FSTN displays.

VATN displays are typically available as character displays or also custom made with various icons.

Last big benefit advantage of VATN displays is only about 15-25% higher price in comparison to standard types, what´s significantly less than in case of OLED displays. Perhaps the only small limitation is the fact that majority of available types is with a viewing direction of “12:00“ i.e. slightly from the top, but in respect to wide viewing angles this doesn´t matter in praxis.

Greg: Hello, Dr Pan. I am Greg. I came here to learn about VA LCD Screen. 

Dr Pan: Hello, Greg.  VA is the abbreviation for Vertical Alignment. VA LCD is a negative and transmissive display with LED backlight. The background color is pure black. VA LCD technology is the only way for monochrome LCD screen to make the pure black background. The color of the letters is the color of LED backlight (usually white). If we want to display multi-color, some special color films will be added to the bottom of ITO glass.

Normally, if the view angle is 12 o’clock, it can be seen very clearly in 12 o’clock direction, 3 o’clock direction, 9 o’clock direction and the front side.

Theoretically, we can add one more compensation film to VA LCD, it becomes full view angle. Actually, it is barely used because it is too expensive.

 The maximum COM is 16, so it is not suitable for the large dot matrix and complicated displays.  It is a perfect display for the pure black background high end devices.
