The problem with brushes

Hi everyone,
I haven’t posted here in quite some time, but whenever I paint in oils, I typically do plein air, so this is the most familiar forum to me.

I typically paint in oils and tend to use bristle brushes for most of my work due to their strength, but lately I’ve been experiencing some problems with various brands of bristle brushes. It seems the problems with them have worsened, as if a lot of brands are using cheaper materials. The main problem I’ve experienced is with the bristles “splaying” or curving outward and not holding a shape. I’ve bought expensive ones, such as:

• Dick Blick’s master bristle, which carries a lifetime warranty. Besides the problems with splaying, they seemed to lack strength and performed poorly.
• W&N Artist’s Oil Brush – same problems as mentioned above.
• daVinci Maestro 2 – This one was the worst with regard to splaying. I mean, the WORST.
• Same problems with Robert Simmons Signet line.

The only ones I’ve not had problems with are Grumbacher Professional Bristle #4232, which I can’t find anymore; and Holbein Killington brand, which I think I bought at a trade show and now cannot find anywhere.

I’ve recently tried Utrecht #209, which seems to hold up a little better, but not as good as the Grumbacher line.

By the way, these brushes are all filberts, and after I wash them with OMS, I always wash them with soap and water. May be the water is damaging the bristle, I’m not sure.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?
