2.Water resistance ratings for flood lights

The second digit of "IP" means protection against liquid ingress, which in the case of flood lights means water resistance. Flood lights are rated from 4 to 8. The most typical water resistance ratings for flood lights are 4, 5 and 6. Water resistance rating 4 implies that the flood light can withstand water splashes from all directions, rating 5 implies that the flood light can withstand water jets, and rating 6 implies that the fixture can withstand powerful water jets.

For different kinds of flood lights, water resistance is the same as in the case of solid resistance. The fewer parts the flood light has, the simpler and cheaper it is to protect the luminaire. Motion sensor flood lights have a water protection rating of 4-5, while virtually any common portable LED work light has a water protection rating of at least 5. Powerful LED portable work lights for more specific and even extreme operating environments have additional sealed housings and a waterproof rating of 8. These flood lights are protected from continual exposure to water.
